ARTIFACTS is a hybrid project that makes a connection between nature, art, and technology, offering a humanistic and nature-centric design alternative in a time of a global environmental crisis.
Fallen pieces of bark from American Sycamore trees – true readymades of nature—become the material for ARTIFACTS, a lighting collection created by Boym Partners in their Upstate New York studio.
Natural camouflage patterns of sycamore are here enhanced with artistic interventions by Laurene Leon Boym, which turn the masculine military connotation of camouflage into a joyful pattern of design resistance.
Boym Partners Inc was founded in New York City in 1986 by Constantin Boym; his partner Laurene Leon Boym joined the studio in 1994. Boym Partners bring a critical, experimental approach to a range of products and environments that infuse humor and wit into the everyday. The studio’s designs are included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Boym Partners was a winner of the National Design Award in 2009. The studio is a recipient of eight I.D. Magazine Annual Design Awards, including the Best of Category in 2000.
A book devoted to the work of Boym Partners, Curious Boym: Design Works, was published by Princeton Architectural Press in 2002.
