A globule of gas in a liquid—a phenomenon better known as a bubble—plays a vital role in nature. Inspired by this often-overlooked occurrence, the Bubble Table Lamp captures the moment when varying sizes of bubbles collide and unite in a playful, one-of-a-kind configuration. Crafted from carbon-sequestering hemp and living mycelium, this lamp is grown—not manufactured—using the roots of mushrooms.
All MushLume lampshades are made by combining sustainably sourced hemp with mycelium, a rapidly renewable organism. In just a few days, the mycelium grows and binds to the hemp, forming a solid structure in custom molds. Once fully grown, the lampshades are dried and heated, resulting in a stable, non-toxic, and biodegradable product.
I want to connect people to nature on a deeper level, forming a unique relationship with a fascinating living organism—mycelium. To do this I have to be uncompromising, using only sustainable processes and materials even if it means spending years on research and development to bring our products to market. This particular table lamp pushed my design skills, creating a 5-part mold and multi-step growing process to achieve a single structure using no additional fasteners or glues to hold the shape. Only the power of nature binds this biodegradable lamp together. This lamp is a demonstration that good design can also be good for both people and planet.
